[OAUGNetDBA]-Can you share O_H like you can Apps Tier?

Hello All,

As I have been asked to squeeze another instance onto an already
overcrowed box, the question occurs to me, is it possible to share the
rdbms ORACLE_HOME (R12, 10g) between instances (just like one can
share the R12 APPL_TOP and technology stacks between instances)?

The problem is, while I can expand our file system for datafile space,
the file system for the O_H binaries is full, so I am wondering if it
is possible to share an R12/10g O_H.

I can't find anything specific that addresses sharing the R12/10g
rdbms home, but I am wondering why not. It seems that anything
CONTEXT specific is under a CONTEXT_NAME directory.

The complications I see would be: a) file ownership/ permission
issues (make sure rwx is available for 2nd owner/group, or if same
owner, b) make sure the proper enviornment set when starting /
stopping and instance, and c) and of course patching issues, both
instances would have to be patches\d together. And of finally autocfg
issues. Again you would have to be careful to make sure the
enviornment was set correctly.

As long as you are careful about these issues, I would imagine you
could share the O_H between instances?
All thoughts and input are welcome.

Gerry
